Uncovering archaeological landscapes at Angkor using lidar

The article describes the use of airborne laser scanning (lidar) technology to create high-precision digital elevation models of the ground surface beneath vegetation cover. This technology enables the authors to identify an entire, previously undocumented, formally planned urban landscape into which the major temples such as Angkor Wat were integrated. The above photograph is the lidar digital terrain model - all features are of the Angkor medieval era except for the red lines which indicate post-medieval features such as roads and canals.
